Previous FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and impeding a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's lawyer filed the plea representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would try to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple causes including that his the accused, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was charged shortly after the former president urged his top legal official to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they planned to present several legal requests to dismiss the case before a court case, arguing the legal action was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully assigned to handle the case.

James Comey's legal matter was initially managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

The former director came across in positive mood as he entered the court on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the previous administration recently fired.

Upon hearing to the judge state his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he grasped the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the court.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's first term as president. At the time, he was overseeing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, the director caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was examining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, leading to criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

The federal government allege the former director lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the Senate by claiming he had not permitted someone at the agency to disclose to news outlets details about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

In a video the former director shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of acting like a "autocrat".

"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Thus initiate a court case."

The accusations against James Comey surfaced after the former president shared on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and other people.
