Major Internet Outage Impacts Many Websites and Apps

A widespread internet disruption has impacted numerous websites and mobile apps worldwide, and users noting troubles accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The impacted apps include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-owned operations like its key e-commerce site and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and additional accounts of difficulties using the HMRC website on that morning. Also in the UK, several Ring customers took to online platforms to complain their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of issues on specific applications totaled the tens of thousands for each app.

The company stated that the outage originated in the Atlantic coast of the United States at AWS, a unit that supplies essential internet backbone for a host of businesses, who lease resources on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the most extensive web hosting service.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), the company announced “elevated problem frequencies and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the east coast of the America. The cascading impact seemed to hit platforms worldwide, and the outage tracking website reporting issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that monitors web disruptions, further indicated a surge in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances located in the state of Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the outage started.
